Your First Visit
Everything you need to know before your first acupuncture visit.
Whether you’re coming for Community Care, One-on-One Care, Specialty Care, or Accompaniment, we’re glad you’re here. This guide will help you prepare, know what to expect, and feel comfortable before you arrive.
Before Your Visit
- Complete any intake forms sent to you before your appointment.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing whenever possible.
- Eat a light meal before your visit rather than arriving very hungry.
- Arrive a few minutes early so you have time to settle in.
- Bring any relevant medical information, imaging reports, medication lists, or other records that may be helpful.
What to Expect
Your practitioner will begin by listening to what brings you in, reviewing your health history, and identifying the goals that matter most to you.
The exact format of your visit depends on the service you choose, but every appointment is individualized. Your practitioner will explain what they recommend, answer your questions, and help you understand the next step in your care.
Your First Community Acupuncture Visit
Community Acupuncture takes place in our quiet shared treatment room. You may receive treatment in a recliner or on an orthopedic treatment table.
- You remain fully clothed.
- Your practitioner completes a focused intake and creates an individualized treatment.
- Wear clothing that allows easy access to your arms and legs.
- Use a quiet voice and silence your phone while in the treatment room.
- Please avoid strong fragrances.
- Needles remain in place while you rest. Many patients rest for approximately 30 to 45 minutes.
Your First One-on-One or Specialty Visit
One-on-One and Specialty appointments take place in a private treatment room and allow additional time for consultation, assessment, treatment planning, positioning, and specialized care.
Depending on the service, your visit may include acupuncture, hands-on assessment, manual techniques, herbal medicine evaluation, or other approaches appropriate to your care. Your practitioner will explain each part of the visit before proceeding.
Your First Accompaniment Visit
Accompaniment offers a different kind of space. Somatic Attunement begins with the body, nervous system, and embodied awareness. Life Accompaniment begins with the transitions, relationships, questions, longings, and circumstances shaping your life.
Both begin with thoughtful preparation so your first session can meet you where you are.
What Should I Wear?
Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing is best for acupuncture. Clothing that allows access to the arms, legs, shoulders, knees, or other areas being treated is especially helpful. For private treatments, your practitioner will explain any clothing or positioning needs before treatment begins.
Eat Before Your Appointment
We recommend eating something within a few hours of your visit and arriving reasonably hydrated. You do not need a large meal, but receiving acupuncture on a completely empty stomach can occasionally leave people feeling lightheaded.

Common First-Visit Questions
Does acupuncture hurt?
Most people are surprised by how gentle acupuncture feels. You may notice a brief sensation when a needle is placed, followed by heaviness, warmth, tingling, or deep relaxation.
How many treatments will I need?
That depends on your condition, how long it has been present, your goals, and how your body responds. Your practitioner will discuss recommendations with you rather than asking you to commit to a treatment plan before your first visit.
Can I drive afterward?
Most patients return to their usual activities after treatment. Many people feel deeply relaxed, so give yourself a few moments before leaving if you need them.
